The Hidden Inner Voice That’s Keeping You Stuck - You Can Reprogram. Read This.

It’s been there so long, that you mistake it for you.

You chalk it up to just how you are.

And others probably do, too.

I just can’t make enough money.

I just have delicate health.

I just don’t have what it takes to succeed.

I just attract the wrong guys.

…and so on.

It’s conflated with your behaviors, traits, habits and tendencies and even your addictions.

It’s Not You

“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately… you usually don’t use it at all. It uses you.”- Eckhart Tolle

It’s an inner voice that you adopted without awareness and without inquiry. It’s not your true voice and it likely doesn’t reflect who you really are and who you came to be.

It’s a foreign invader camping out in your psyche and you’ve been a gracious host.

This conditioned internalized voice is fanatically loyal to the mega myths of our culture, spewing some version of you’re separate, you can’t, you have to conform or you’re inadequate.

You picked it up kinda like we pick up viruses. It was subtly lurking in your environment and you didn’t know to be cautious. Had you been warned, you’d have secured the gates of your unconscious.

Negative programs that slither in during traumatic times in our lives are particularly veiled.

But, you can overcome any and all conditioning by taking simple, consistent action that I will clearly explain at the end of this article.

Turning The Tables On Conditioned Voices

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” ― Jiddu Krishnamurti

Whatever occurred in the past can only live on via your thoughts and the emotional residue that your thoughts produce.

Negative thoughts and experiences are highly charged. They cause our bodies to secrete cortisol, the stress hormone, which gives them high priority in the hippocampus, the part of our emotional brain that stores memory.

This is why we remember negative experiences over positive. Evolutionarily speaking, it probably once insured our survival. Now, it sabotages our success.

And, as Dr. Joe Dispenza clearly describes in his book, Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself — your unconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between an imagined event (a memory, thought or feeling), and an actual live occurrence.

Both feel equally real to the shadowy unconscious.

And we can use this to our advantage.

No matter how, when or what happened to you, you can change the course of your life by recasting the voices in your head.

It’s fun. You’ll like this. Keep reading…

Interrupt The Program

“Open the window of your mind. Allow the fresh air, new lights and new truths to enter.” — Amit Ray

Whatever bad news is getting airtime in your head, start by refusing to accept such a decree upon your life.

Get indignant if you must. Restore yourself to your rightful role as executive producer of what goes on in your head.

Be defiant. Push back. Refuse to acquiescence your best life to the glut of sad narratives on this planet. There is so much beauty here, so much potential. And, we have a big, exciting clean-up project ahead of us.

We have the potential to create a new world, one in which we live aligned with our higher human capacities.

And, we need to start by turning things around in our own inner-verse.

As always, I urge you not to compromise the greatest vision you have for your life. By grand design, your dreams are leading you to your own success and the better world we all seek.

Be Watchful, But Not In The Way You’ve Been

“You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.” — Pema Chödrön

This fuller expression of yourself, this next level of fulfillment, requires a radical reframing on a very deep level, or things cannot really change.

Negative storylines and defeating beliefs that our mammalian, pattern-seeking brains perpetuate, need to be interrupted and reprogrammed.

A new emotional baseline must be established.

You’re not required to identify when and where the hidden inner voice got in; you just need to know what message it’s throwing into the feed.

Become watchful.

Start to listen, but don’t necessarily believe what you hear.

Observe consciously without identifying with these negative thoughts.

As you witness them, remind yourself of who you do not want to be.

And do not let them sneak by any longer without your conscious consent.

Your inner voices can make you sick.

And, if you regrogram them, they can make you well.

They can help you thrive and achieve your goals faster than anything else.

Nail The Naysayer

“Mindfulness isn’t difficult, we just need to remember to do it.” — Sharon Salzberg

What area of your life isn’t living up to your heart’s desire? Where do you feel at an impasse, unable to break through?

Is it in the realm of relationships, work, finance, health…?

Once you identify that, find the character that convinces you that you can’t, or that it is going to be very difficult to achieve your goal.

Jot down it’s negative commentary. Hold it out in front of you. Step back and observe.

“Hmmm”, ask yourself, “does this character fit in with my chosen life script?”

If not, withdraw your attention and start looking for its replacement.

Role Play The Real You

“Intention by itself does nothing. Intention has to be married to an elevated emotion…” — Dr. Joe Dispenza

Remember, our brains love patterns. If you want to change a pattern, create a new one.

If you’re not being the person you want to be, then you must rehearse the role you’d like to find yourself in.

Here’s how:

  1. Set aside at least 5 min at the beginning and end of every day and increase the time gradually. Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. (I do this lying in bed before anyone knows I am awake in the morning, and before I fall off to sleep.)
  2. Jettison yourself into a future reality where you’ve achieved this dream. Imagine it has happened: You’ve healed from that cancer. You’ve acheived your financial goals. You’ve found that life partner. You have that home and career that you love. You’re vibrant and healthy…
  3. Lie there and emotionally and mentally become that future you…just for 5 min(at first)! Feel how you’ll feel when you’ve achieved this dream. Think the thoughts you’ll have when you are there. Let this sense of self infiltrate your mind and body, from limb to limb until it has permeated every neuron.

You are withdrawing energy from the old role. You are transferring that energy to the role that you want to fulfill.

You are infusing this true self with tons of feeling, because you need to compete with the cortisol hit that the naysayer delivers.

In the process, you are reconditioning yourself emotionally and neurologically.

Do this every day as often as you can. Soon you will not only believe this inner character, it’s who you will be.

You’ll unconsciously find yourself taking action to make the inner and outer reality match.

You’ll instinctually seek out the situations and people that are meant to play a role in your most inspired life.

Conclusion

Negative inner voices get a lot of air time because they produce a strong and stimulating release of cortisol, the stress hormone.

We are wired to pay attention to negative thoughts, probably because at one time in our human evolution this made for better survival.

But now, repeated attention to negative thoughts sabotages our intentions.

We can reprogram our minds and shift our inner voices to align with our preferred life.

It simply requires rehearsing the role you want to find yourself in, with full feeling, until you’ve unconsciously programmed yourself to believe it is who you are.

No matter what you have experienced in the past, you can change your life by changing the quality of your inner voices.
